Vernal, Utah better known as Dinosaurland delivered a prehistoric party that stuck the landing. On August 28, 2026, during Dinah “Soar” Days, 804 people in full dinosaur costumes packed downtown and officially claimed the Guinness World Records title for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs.
They beat the previous mark of 682 set by the University of Calgary in April 2026. Local organizers from Uintah Special Service District 1, led by Executive Director Cheryl Meier, had come close in 2025 but fell short on counting technicalities despite a strong turnout. This time they used a cleared Lamplighter Block area and adapted to Guinness’s new scanning app. Adjudicator Hannah Ortman, who delivered the bad news the year before, returned and praised the improved planning.
Vernal leans hard into its fossil heritage. The town sits near Dinosaur National Monument, home to one of the world’s densest concentrations of Jurassic dinosaur bones, and features roughly 150 dinosaur statues, many decorated by local artists. The record fit the community’s identity perfectly.
After the official count, the real moment landed. Organizers asked all 804 costumed participants to roar together. A Texas-based childhood cancer nonprofit had contacted them the day before, requesting a video of the group roaring “RAWR” which many dinosaur fans treat as “I love you” for an event honoring a young boy who had died of cancer and loved dinosaurs. Meier and the team dedicated the roar both to that request and to a local 4-year-old girl in the community battling stage-four lung cancer. Guinness noted the tribute left many in the crowd emotional.
Meier told ABC4:
“We have a little girl in our community right now that is fighting stage four lung cancer at four years old. So this request wasn’t hard to fulfill. And our little friend in our community, we dedicated it to her.”
She stressed the effort was about community pride:
“This isn’t about me, but this is about our community… We show up for each other.”
Guinness World Records officially lists the 804-person gathering in Vernal on 28 August 2026 under the category “largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs.” The collective roar in support of people fighting cancer, including the local child, is confirmed in both Guinness’s account and organizer statements. The viral X post accurately summarized a real, documented community event. No material discrepancies appear in official or credible local sources.
