Rapper Rick Ross was arrested early Thursday morning and voluntarily surrendered to Miami Beach police at 6:10 a.m. at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he was booked on one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery — both domestic violence-related.
The 50-year-old rapper, real name William Leonard Roberts II, faces the charges after an alleged incident at his Star Island mansion in Miami Beach back in late August 2026. According to arrest affidavits and court records, the alleged victim accused Ross of repeatedly striking and slapping her during an argument, restricting her breathing, and later sharing photos of the injuries with police. The case was classified as domestic violence.
Ross’s legal team has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “false” and “wrongful.” His attorneys stated that the ex-girlfriend involved in the public accusations did not file a police report until about a month later, and Ross maintains his innocence. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Courtroom Exchange Highlights Celebrity Status Claim
Ross appeared remotely via video in a remote arraignment before Judge Mindy Glazer of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. His attorney, Bradley Horenstein, requested expedited release, citing the rapper’s celebrity status and potential safety concerns while in custody.
Glazer, however, pushed back sharply. When Horenstein explained the reasons for hurry, she responded: “What does that mean?” After the attorney mentioned the red jumpsuit and safety protocols, Glazer said, “I don’t know.” She then addressed Ross directly: “Hi, Mr. Roberts. I have no idea who you are, except somebody here in the court who’s going to be treated fairly just like everybody else here.”
The exchange, captured on video by WSVN 7News and quickly shared on social media, sparked widespread memes and commentary online, with some calling it a clear message that fame does not exempt anyone from standard legal procedures.
Bond and Immediate Release
Court records showed bond set at $5,000 on the felony strangulation charge and $1,000 on the misdemeanor battery charge — a combined total of $6,000. Ross posted bond the same day and was released from custody.
A stay-away order involving the alleged victim was issued as part of his release conditions. His full arraignment is scheduled for October 22, 2026.
Ross’s Public Response
In statements to the media and through his legal team, Ross said he is “totally innocent” and urged the public not to prejudge the case. He emphasized that the legal process will determine the truth and expressed plans to continue his music career and business activities.
The case remains ongoing, and the allegations against Ross have not been proven in court. The judge’s direct refusal to grant special treatment based on celebrity status drew attention as a reminder of equal protection under the law in Florida courts.
