Emily Ratajkowski wrote that having a child with the wrong man was the fastest way to ruin your life as a woman. The line sits in her June 12 essay for The Cut. This weekend the quote is circulating again on X next to a photo of the model in a bikini holding her son Sylvester.
Ratajkowski, 35, said the fear started in childhood. Single mom was a phrase people used like an insult. It meant no freedom, no choices, and no way out. All baggage. No security.
She married film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard in February 2018 after a few weeks of dating. Their son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, arrived March 8, 2021. Six months later the couple stopped having sex. They separated less than a year after the birth.
Ratajkowski filed for divorce in Manhattan Supreme Court in September 2022. The marriage was dissolved in July 2025. In the essay she is clear about who ended it. She left. She was not left.
After the split she started dating constantly. She called it trying to figure out what kind of woman she wanted to be. She built a character she compared to Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Sexual but scary. Gin martinis. A lot of them.
She set two rules. Never miss bedtime. Almost no sleepovers. After nights out she would get dressed and leave so she could be home when her son woke at 6 a.m. asking for her.
She also wrote that many men were turned on by motherhood. A woman at a party told her men do not care that she has a kid. Ratajkowski found the opposite. They liked it. Some seemed drawn to the idea that sacrifice was already part of her life.
Before the marriage she had slept with eight people. She had never had a one-night stand. She wanted to be precious. After the divorce she decided to destroy that version of herself. She wanted the Madonna gone and the other figure in her place.
The essay drew sharp responses. Megyn Kelly called it harmful to young women and criticized The Cut for publishing it. Other single mothers in New York said the piece felt out of touch with the daily grind most of them live.
Ratajkowski has said leaving was a hard choice that cost her. Becoming a single mother changed how people looked at her, just as she had feared. It also let her see herself differently. The power she claimed was the ability to say no and walk away.
Bear-McClard, now in his mid-40s, produced films including Uncut Gems. Reports at the time of the split described alleged infidelity. In 2023 Variety published accusations of sexual misconduct from multiple women. He has not publicly addressed those claims in detail.
Sylvester is five. Ratajkowski has spoken about prioritizing him while she dated. The photo now paired with the old quote shows her carrying him in matching swimwear. Some replies focused on how she held him. The essay itself is two months old. The line about the wrong man is what people are repeating today.
She has been linked more recently to French director Romain Gavras. The Cut piece remains the fullest public account she has given of the years after the marriage ended.
