Mark Zuckerberg Buys Historic 1830s Gothic Castle in Ireland

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have bought Strancally Castle, a Gothic Revival mansion on 440 acres along the River Blackwater in County Waterford, Ireland.

The Meta chief executive completed the off-market purchase several weeks before the deal became public on August 20, 2026. A spokesperson confirmed the acquisition that day. Exact terms remain private and have not yet appeared on Ireland’s Property Price Register. The Irish Times, which first reported the sale, estimated the estate’s value at between €20 million and €30 million, or roughly $23 million to $35 million.

“Mark and his family are excited to continue caring for this historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters,” said Brian Baker, a spokesperson for Zuckerberg.

The couple plans to keep their primary residence in the United States and use the castle as a base during visits to Ireland. Meta’s European headquarters sit in Dublin, about 125 to 200 kilometers north of the property. The company employs roughly 1,500 people in the country and operates a data center outside the capital.

Strancally Castle is a three-story cut-stone house of about 16,000 square feet. Architects James and George Richard Pain designed it around 1830 for John Keily, a former Conservative MP and High Sheriff of County Waterford. The scale is deliberately grand. One contemporary description noted that a brisk walk of four and a half minutes was needed to travel from the dining room to the kitchen.

The estate sits in the Blackwater Valley near Youghal, close to other large holdings including Ballynatray House, purchased by British inventor James Dyson for about €29 million in 2024. The main house and several structures on the grounds are protected buildings.

Michael Alen-Buckley, co-founder of the London investment firm RAB Capital, and his wife Giancarla Alen-Buckley sold the property. Giancarla is a daughter of the late hotel magnate Charles Forte and sister of Rocco Forte. The couple had owned Strancally for 25 years and carried out extensive restoration work, including the addition of an indoor swimming pool.

In a statement, the sellers said they left their home of 25 years fondly and were grateful for the chance to save and restore the castle. They added they were delighted that Zuckerberg and his family intended to continue investing in the property and grounds in a sustainable way, and wished them happiness there.

Zuckerberg’s broader real-estate holdings already include multiple properties in California, Hawaii, Florida and Washington, D.C. This purchase adds a substantial European foothold near Meta’s key international operations.
