Massachusetts Teen Accused of Killing Family Used ChatGPT for Murder Fantasy Stories

A 17-year-old Acton high school student charged with killing his mother and younger brother used ChatGPT in the days and hours before the deaths to generate Gothic-style fantasy stories about family members being killed, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Arjun Aravind faces two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his brother Siddharth Aravind, 14. The two were found dead inside the family’s home on Martha Lane in Acton on the evening of August 11, 2026. Prosecutors say both showed signs of a violent struggle and blunt-force trauma. Official causes of death remain pending from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police responded just after 6:30 p.m. that Tuesday after Aravind’s father called for a well-being check. A tutor scheduled to visit the home could not get inside. The father, who had left for work around 7 a.m., said he could not reach anyone by phone. Officers found Siddharth dead on the first floor and Venkatesan in the finished basement. Arjun Aravind was not present.

Investigators determined he had left in his mother’s 2014 green Honda Accord. Early the next morning, Wayland police responding to an unrelated alarm spotted the car in a parking lot on Andrew Avenue. Aravind was inside and was arrested without incident. He was later found to have stopped at a Stop & Shop and purchased large quantities of protein bars and cereal totaling about $2,000.

Ryan told reporters that Aravind had recently shown concerning behavior that included internet searches and the use of ChatGPT to create theoretical ideas or fantasy stories about killing his family.

“He was engaged in the use of ChatGPT in creating fantasy stories, kind of the gothic novel kind of stories, asking questions, creating characters, asking what about this if this happened to that, and they seem to appear to relate to threats to his family not surviving,”

she said.

Court documents and reporting on the investigation describe a specific prompt entered the morning of the killings. One character was named Adrian. According to accounts of the records, Aravind wrote something to the effect of waiting until Adrian kills the parents and considering how he might lure one into a conversation in the basement as they had always forced him to do, then asking what excuse he would use to take their phone. Prosecutors have not released the full ChatGPT exchanges.

Evidence recovered at the scene included a bloody laptop and a bent, knifelike object. The family had previously hidden knives in the house because of Aravind’s behavioral issues, his father told police. The father also reported that Aravind had been diagnosed with autism and that the family had worked to keep him on a stable path, including moving to Acton for better schools and support.

Aravind, a rising senior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, was arraigned Thursday, August 13, in Concord District Court. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf on two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a family or household member, and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He also faces charges of using a vehicle without authority and motor vehicle theft. He is being held without bail. A probable-cause hearing is scheduled for September 11.

His attorney, Debra DeWitt, said the teenager appeared shocked and confused and did not initially realize his mother and brother were dead. She described him as a young man with emotional issues and said the family had sought help.

“They were trying to work with the system that failed him,”

DeWitt said. She requested a psychiatric evaluation. The father supports that evaluation and wants help for his son, according to the attorney.

Sudha Venkatesan worked as a software development manager at Amazon focused on machine software and controls for fulfillment technologies and robotics. The family lived in the affluent Boston suburb roughly 20 miles northwest of the city. Both sons attended the local regional high school. Ryan called the deaths an unspeakable tragedy and an incredibly dark day for the community.

The investigation continues under the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Acton Police, and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit. No further details on motive have been released. Prosecutors have not claimed that ChatGPT directed Aravind to commit violence. The chatbot activity is presented as part of the concerning behavior observed before the killings.
