Body of 18-Year Old Described as Nolan Xavier Wells Found on Horn Island, Mississippi on July 6, Ending a Tragic Search for the Missing High School Graduate.
Founding of the body of 18-year-old on Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 6 brings an unfortunate closure to the search for the missing young man who had gone missing during the Fourth of July boat ride with his friends.
Wells, whose nickname is “Nono,” took a boat trip to Horn Island which is one of the Gulf Islands National Seashore located 10 miles away from the Mississippi coast to commemorate Independence Day. Wells was last seen between 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm on July 4 dressed in blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and shirtless. He went back to the mainland without any friends, thinking that he found some other means of transportation. His cell phone remained in the boat, hindering efforts to find him.
Nolan Xavier Wells was a graduate of Ocean Springs High School in 2025 where he participated in football games. He enrolled at Southwest Mississippi Community College where he played as a wide receiver in his first year (No. 16). As described by his coaches and people within the community, Nolan was a very friendly, hardworking and modest individual who was able to lead and was a “spark” for a room.
Christine Wonsley, his mother, made an emotional plea to the public during the search, and later on, the family’s tragic loss was confirmed. “He was a special soul,” according to family statements.
July 4, 2026: Wells disappears on Horn Island after celebrating with friends. Last sightings place him near the northwest end, including interactions with others that day. July 5-6, 2026: Multi-agency search ramps up.
July 6, around 8:45 a.m.: A park ranger finds a body in the water off the northwest end of the island. Family confirmation follows that afternoon, though formal DNA testing by Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd continues.
Searches were conducted both on land, sea, shorelines, and in dense vegetation from a command center located at Lake Mars Boat Launch under the leadership of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, United Cajun Navy, park rangers, pilot volunteers, and boaters.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed the body matched Wells’ description. Officials have pointed to a likely drowning with no evidence of foul play publicly identified so far. The investigation remains active, including autopsy scheduled for July 7.
The search has officially ended as the focus shifts to forensic confirmation and supporting the grieving family. Ocean Springs School District and coaches, including Jake Bramlett, have offered tributes honoring Wells’ character and contributions to the team.
This tragedy is a sobering reminder that the holidays on distant tropical islands can be dangerous for several reasons. While the community mourns the loss of one of its promising young athletes, it is important to remember that the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. The family has asked for privacy while they grieve.
