Woman Dies a Year After Tragic Chicago High School Reunion Shooting

Arneka McReynolds, a 26-year-old recent college graduate and fiancée of Michigan State University football player Alante Brown, has died after fighting for her life for nearly a year following a shooting at an informal after-party tied to a Simeon Career Academy high school reunion in Chicago.

McReynolds was shot in the head during a triple shooting that erupted around midnight on July 19, 2025, in the Jewel-Osco parking lot at 87th Street and Lafayette Avenue in Chicago’s South Side Chatham/West Pullman neighborhood. The gathering drew a large crowd of alumni and friends following official reunion events.

According to local reports, a confrontation in the crowded parking lot turned into gunfire involving at least two gunmen. McReynolds was struck as an innocent bystander. 24-year-old Rasheed Walker was killed after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, while another 24-year-old man was injured in the shoulder.

McReynolds was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Family members, including her father Allen Hall, maintained a vigil as she remained unresponsive in the hospital in the months that followed. Brown, who continued his football career at Michigan State, publicly dedicated performances to his fiancée during her hospitalization.

A Simeon Career Academy alumna who had recently graduated from Harris-Stowe State University with a degree in early childhood education, McReynolds had been living in Michigan with Brown at the time of the incident. She had traveled to Chicago specifically for the reunion celebrations.

The official Simeon Alumni Association events, including a scholarship cookout in south suburban Calumet City, were peaceful, according to organizers. The shooting occurred at an unofficial after-party in the city. No arrests were prominently reported in initial coverage of the incident.

News of McReynolds’ passing, which occurred in recent days from complications related to her injuries, has circulated widely on social media, prompting an outpouring of tributes highlighting her vibrant personality and the devastating impact of gun violence on young lives and families.

This tragedy underscores the ongoing challenges with gun violence at large social gatherings in parts of Chicago. McReynolds’ death comes as a particularly heartbreaking reminder of the long-term consequences such incidents can have.

Our thoughts go out to McReynolds’ family, Brown, and all those mourning her loss.
