The Minnesota hockey community is in mourning following a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of beloved NHL reporter Jessi Pierce, her three young children, and the family dog early Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at a single-family home on the 2100 block of Richard Avenue in White Bear Lake, a suburb northeast of the Twin Cities. Neighbors reported seeing flames coming through the roof and called 911 around 5:26 a.m. on March 21, 2026. Fire crews from the White Bear Lake Fire Department, with mutual aid from nearby departments, arrived to find the structure fully engulfed.
Despite rapid suppression efforts, responders located four deceased individuals inside: Pierce, 37, and her children — Hudson, Cayden, and Avery — along with the family’s dog. All victims were pronounced dead at the scene. No survivors were found in the home.
Pierce’s husband, Mike Pierce, was out of town on business at the time and was not injured. Authorities, including the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, are leading an active investigation into the cause of the fire. As of March 23, no official cause has been determined, and there are no indications of foul play mentioned in public reports.
Jessi Pierce was a fixture in the Minnesota Wild and broader NHL community. For over a decade, she served as the team’s correspondent for NHL.com, delivering passionate coverage of games, players, and hockey culture in the “State of Hockey.” She also co-hosted the popular “Bardown Beauties” podcast and made frequent appearances on local shows like “Judd’s Hockey Show.” Pierce contributed to other outlets, including coverage of the Minnesota Frost in the PWHL, and was known for her energetic, kind, and compassionate approach.
The NHL and Minnesota Wild quickly expressed profound grief. The league stated:
“The entire National Hockey League family sends our prayers and deepest condolences to the Pierce family on the passing of Jessi Pierce and her three young children. Jessi loved our game and was a valued member of the NHL.com team for a decade. We will miss her terribly.”
Bill Price, vice president and editor-in-chief of NHL.com, described Pierce as “an absolute joy to talk to and work with,” highlighting her evident love for her family and hockey.
The Minnesota Wild echoed the sentiment, calling her “a kind, compassionate person who cared deeply about her family and those around her” and “a dedicated ambassador for the game of hockey.” The team added that they are “heartbroken” and join the community in mourning.
