68-Year-Old Heroine Fights Off Armed Carjacker in Daring Escape

A Missouri woman’s quick thinking during an armed carjacking attempt has drawn national attention after surveillance and interview footage of the incident circulated online.

According to KSDK News, 68-year-old Peggy Janis was returning to her vehicle in the Grandview Plaza parking lot in Florissant, Missouri, when a man approached her from behind and pressed a gun into her back, demanding her car keys. The suspect, later identified by police as 40-year-old J.R. Robins, allegedly told Janis, “There’s a gun at your back. Give me your keys.”

Janis initially offered her purse, but the suspect refused and repeated his demand for the vehicle. Janis resisted, and a physical struggle followed. During the altercation, Robins fired a single gunshot into the ground. No one was struck.

In the confusion, Robins grabbed a key from Janis’ key ring — later discovering it was not her car key, but the key to her electric bike. He ran to the vehicle, attempted to start it, and realized it would not work. Janis reenacted the moment in her interview, describing the suspect’s apparent realization before he fled the scene on foot.

Police responded shortly after the incident and arrested Robins nearby. Prosecutors charged him with vehicle hijacking, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. Janis reported minor injuries, including soreness and a sprained hand, but did not require hospitalization.

Video accompanying the KSDK report shows Janis returning to the parking lot where the incident occurred, calmly recounting the events and reflecting on her decision not to comply. The footage also includes Robins’ mugshot following his arrest.

Reaction online has been divided. Some viewers praised Janis’ resolve and composure under pressure, while others cautioned that resisting an armed suspect carries significant risk. Law enforcement experts generally advise compliance during armed carjackings, noting that de-escalation reduces the likelihood of injury in most cases.

According to FBI crime data, carjackings declined nationwide in 2023 to approximately 6.6 incidents per 100,000 people. Experts emphasize that while Janis’ encounter ended without serious injury, such outcomes are uncommon and often depend on rapidly changing circumstances.

Janis, who works as a hairstylist, has not described her actions as planned, instead characterizing them as instinctive. “I just didn’t give him my car key,” she told KSDK, adding that the outcome came down to a moment of confusion — and luck.
