Simu Liu turned to Taylor Swift to help make his engagement to Allison Hsu even more memorable.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Dec. 15, the Marvel actor shared that he enlisted the pop superstar to deliver a surprise congratulatory video message immediately after proposing to Hsu in Paris in May 2025. The moment Liu said was deeply personal, given Swift’s long-standing significance in their relationship.
“Taylor Swift’s songs and her music, that was a big part of the beginning of our relationship,” Liu, 36, told Fallon. “I thought, ‘Well, there’s one person that would make this engagement so special.’”
Hsu, 28, is a digital marketing executive at Interscope Records, where she works with major artists including Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish. Liu described her as a lifelong Swift fan, noting that her love for the singer dates back to childhood.
To honor that connection, Liu reached out to Swift through her publicist with what he called a bold request. “I said, ‘Hey, is there any way that I could convince you to make like a two-second video just to say congrats?’” he recalled.
According to Liu, Swift responded quickly. “She literally two days later sent it over, and I was able to play it for her,” he said, calling the video message “the cherry on top” of the proposal.
The reaction from Hsu was immediate and emotional. “She was really emotional before, and then when I played that video, she just completely lost it,” Liu said, adding that the gesture meant more to her than he could have anticipated.
Liu and Hsu, who have been together since late 2022, are both outspoken Swift fans. The couple has attended the Eras Tour together and was also present at the premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film. Liu has previously joked about his admiration for the singer, quipping while hosting the 2024 People’s Choice Awards that he was “a Swiftie long before I was Ken.”
On Fallon, Liu also praised Swift personally, calling her “absolutely just fantastic and so nice and so sweet,” and thanked her for taking time out of her schedule to help make the proposal unforgettable.
The couple announced their engagement in May 2025 with joint Instagram posts featuring photos taken in front of the Eiffel Tower, showcasing Hsu’s diamond ring against the Paris skyline. “From weekends in Paris, day trips to Palm Springs, long nights on set, afternoons vegging on the couch and everything in between,” Liu wrote in the caption, “I choose you forever and always.”
