Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first visit to the White House turned into an instantly viral moment — and it happened over one of the harshest labels he’d thrown at President Donald Trump during the campaign.
Mamdani, who once called Trump a “fascist” and described himself as “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare,” met with the president on Tuesday for what many expected to be a tense introduction. Trump had also attacked Mamdani repeatedly on the trail, calling him a “100% Communist lunatic” and a “total nut job.”
But the two struck an unexpectedly friendly tone during a press availability in the Oval Office.
When a reporter asked Mamdani, “Are you affirming that you think Trump’s a fascist?” the mayor began to give a careful, diplomatic answer: “I’ve spoken about—”
Before he could finish, Trump stepped in with a smile.
“Oh, that’s okay, you can just say yes,” he joked. “It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind.”
The president even gave Mamdani a playful pat on the arm as the room laughed. Mamdani smiled back and replied affirmatively — prompting more laughter from both men.
Vice President JD Vance later called the clip “an all-timer” on social media.
Despite their fiery campaign rhetoric, sources say the meeting between Trump and Mamdani was notably cordial. The two focused on shared priorities, including affordability, housing, grocery prices, and public safety — topics that have dominated both their agendas.
At one point, when Republicans brought up the “jihadist” label previously used against Mamdani, Trump stepped in to defend him, according to officials familiar with the conversation.
The lighthearted exchange, paired with the cooperative tone of the meeting, caught many observers off guard. After months of escalating attacks, the Oval Office moment signaled an unexpected willingness on the part of both men to put aside campaign tensions.
