Kim Kardashian Unveils SKIMS Faux-Hair Underwear and Sparks Body-Hair Debate

Kim Kardashian is having fun with fashion — and fans can’t stop talking about it.

The SKIMS founder, 44, addressed her latest viral product — the brand’s faux hair micro string thongs — while walking the red carpet at the 2025 Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on October 14.

The limited-edition underwear, priced at $32, comes in nude shades and features options for curly or straight faux hair. The pieces sold out within minutes of launching, sparking a wave of online reactions ranging from playful curiosity to full-on debate.

Speaking to Variety at the event, Kardashian explained that the idea came from a spur-of-the-moment creative thought during a photoshoot.

“That was just a fun idea that I had,” she said. “There was a shoot, and someone wanted to, like, have hair down there once. And I was like, ‘Couldn’t this just be easy and have it on a thong?’ And so we made that happen. I had no idea that it would get that reaction and sell out in a few minutes.”

Kardashian, who has become known for turning unexpected fashion moments into viral success stories, hinted that more surprising products could be on the way.

“I think it’s always fun to mix it up,” she added. “We have our nipple bra, our butt and hip shapewear, our Merkins — you never know what we’ll surprise you with.”

For the star-studded gala, presented by Rolex, Kardashian turned heads in a Maison Margiela Haute Couture look featuring a dramatic full-face mask. She described the ensemble as having a “Skims-y vibe,” a nod to her brand’s sleek and sculptural design aesthetic.

The annual event honored Penélope Cruz, Bruce Springsteen, and Bowen Yang, and raised funds for the museum’s programming.

Though the faux hair thongs have divided opinion online, fans and fashion watchers alike agree on one thing: Kim Kardashian knows how to keep the conversation going. Clips from her red carpet interview quickly went viral across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, with thousands weighing in on the playful — and unmistakably Kim — product launch.
