A Florida Walmart turned into a scene of chaos when a man wielding a machete attacked a police officer, and the heart-pounding confrontation was caught on bodycam. On August 30, 2025, at around 9:15 p.m., Fort Pierce Police Department officers rushed to the Walmart store in the 5100 block of Okeechobee Road after multiple 911 calls reported a man brandishing a machete among panicked shoppers. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Lawrence Mansfield Fountain from Vero Beach, was spotted near the store exit, casually pushing a shopping cart with the machete clearly visible in the upper compartment.
Bodycam footage, released by the Fort Pierce Police Department on September 3, 2025, shows officers approaching Fountain with commands to stay put and drop the weapon. The situation escalated quickly when Fountain grabbed the machete and swung it at an officer, striking him in the forearm and causing a laceration. Officers reacted swiftly, forcing Fountain to the ground and disarming him with the aid of a taser after a brief struggle. The injured officer was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover fully.
Fountain sustained minor injuries, received medical evaluation, and was then booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on a $512,000 bond. Investigators believe Fountain took the machete from the store’s inventory, as similar items are sold at Walmart, and began waving it around, sparking fear among customers.
