Baltimore County police stopped a car on Eastern Boulevard in Essex, Maryland, for a basic traffic violation. What began as a mundane stop ended up as a nightmare.
As officers converged on the car, one of them detected a foul odor emanating from the trunk. Body cam video captures the tense exchange as Nicole Michelle Johnson, 36, insisted that officers would
“just find a bunch of dirty blankets.”
But as they cut through layers of trash bags, the odor grew stronger.
“Why you got all these blankets?”
one officer asked.
“Because we stay in hotels, from the hotel to the port,”
Johnson responded nervously.
Moments later, officers discovered a black suitcase. When it was opened, their worst fears were confirmed. Inside were the decomposing remains of two young children.
“What the f? Get the f in! Put your hands up!”
one officer shouted as Johnson was placed under arrest.
The victims were later identified as 7-year-old Joshlyn Marie James Johnson and her 5-year-old brother, Larry Darnell O’Neil III. Autopsy reports revealed that both children had suffered extreme malnutrition: Joshlyn weighed only 18 pounds, while Larry weighed 21 pounds.
Investigators determined that Johnson, their aunt and legal caretaker, had been driving with the children’s bodies in her trunk for months. Joshlyn died in May 2020 after Johnson struck her during an argument, causing a head injury. Larry died in May 2021, allegedly while sleeping in the car. Instead of seeking help, Johnson placed each child’s body in a suitcase or tote and left them in the trunk.
Tragically, the children were never reported missing. Their mother, Dachelle Johnson, who had left them in Nicole Johnson’s care in 2019 after moving from Ohio, later expressed deep regret.
“I thought they were safe with my sister. I will never forgive myself for leaving them,”
she said in a statement.
The case raised troubling questions about systemic oversight. There was no formal custody agreement between Nicole and Dachelle Johnson, making it unclear who was legally responsible. Neither child was enrolled in school after 2019, and there were no welfare checks despite visible warning signs.
Child welfare advocates have compared the tragedy to other notorious neglect cases, such as the 2008 death of Caylee Anthony in Florida, pointing to glaring gaps in Maryland’s protective services.
Michelle Johnson, the children’s maternal grandmother, spoke bluntly at the sentencing hearing.
“I love her, but I want her to pay with every soul in my bones,”
she said, calling for accountability not just from Nicole Johnson, but also from the systems that failed Joshlyn and Larry.
He pleaded guilty to two first-degree child abuse resulting in death charges on August 13, 2024. On February 10, 2025, Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Nancy Purpura sentenced her to prison for life, suspending all but 50 years.
Residents have since pushed for increased oversight of informal arrangements for custody and enhanced coordination between schools and child protective agencies.
This case illustrates the devastating impact of uncontrolled familial abuse. Maryland recorded up to 12,000 child abuse investigations in past 2021, and professionals are worried that most are not being reported.

Both systems failed Joshlyn and Larry at every level. The case reinvigorated calls to remake and is a sobering reminder of a need to improve supervision within child welfare.
“We can’t bring them back,”
said one Essex resident at a candlelight vigil.
“But we can fight to make sure no other children slip between the cracks again.”
