Hollywood icon Denzel Washington recently delighted fans with a funny tale he shared with actor Jamie Foxx about a memorable Oscar loss. The story takes us back to 1988 when Washington missed out on an award and was left with an unexpected consolation prize instead. It’s a classic anecdote that blends humor, humility, and a peek behind the glitz of awards season.
The incident happened at the 60th Academy Awards, held in April 1988. Washington was up for Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance as Steve Biko in Cry Freedom. His competition included Sean Connery, who ultimately took home the prize for his role as a tough Irish cop in The Untouchables. Connery’s win was a highlight of the night, but the evening took a comical turn for Washington. Curious about that year’s ceremony?
Washington shared this gem of a story during an episode of Off Script with Jamie Foxx, a relaxed interview series produced by Grey Goose and released in July 2018. As he told Foxx, he had a hunch he wouldn’t win that night, especially after Connery got a lengthy standing ovation while presenting an award earlier in the evening.
“I went to get the coats,”
Washington quipped, signaling his early exit.
On his way out, he spotted trays of food being prepped for the Governor’s Ball and considered grabbing one.
“I’m leaving here with something,”
He recalled thinking, a nod to his down-to-earth roots. But his mother, ever the voice of reason, suggested he opt for something less messy: a flower arrangement from the venue. Washington agreed, and instead of a snack, he walked away with a bouquet, turning a small defeat into a big laugh.
That 1988 loss didn’t dim Washington’s shine. He bounced back quickly, winning Best Supporting Actor in 1989 for Glory and the Oscar for Best Actor for Training Day at the 74th Annual Academy Awards. Today, he’s celebrated as one of Hollywood’s greatest talents, with a career full of accolades and unforgettable roles.
