High-profile attorney Joe Tacopina, known for defending clients like Donald Trump and ASAP Rocky, revealed Monday that he turned down representing Sean “Diddy” Combs in his ongoing legal battles. He cited his deep loyalty to Jay-Z amid the rapper’s strained relationship with Diddy.
Tacopina dropped the bombshell during an interview on “The Breakfast Club” radio show on Feb. 24, just one day before the story broke widely.
“I was offered the Diddy case, but I didn’t take it,”
Tacopina said.
“Jay-Z and Diddy don’t see eye to eye, and I’ve got a lot of respect for Jay and the Roc Nation family.”
The decision underscores Tacopina’s close ties to Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter. As legal counsel for Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment empire, Tacopina has represented artists like ASAP Rocky and Meek Mill, forging what he calls a “familial” bond with Jay-Z and Roc Nation president Desiree Perez.
“Jay is amazing; Desiree is a bomb of a boss,”
he said on air, hinting at a personal connection that outweighs professional opportunities.
Diddy has been caught up in a web of litigation that followed a 2024 suit last December that claimed that he and Jay-Z had raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000. Though the suit was dropped earlier this month, the fallout appears to have fractured a once-tight friendship between the two hip-hop moguls, who collaborated on tracks like “Do You Like It, Do You Want It” in the ‘90s and partied together as recently as Diddy’s 50th birthday bash in 2019.
Tacopina suggested that the rift played a key role in his choice. “You don’t mess with family,” he added, signaling that his allegiance to Jay-Z and Roc Nation trumped the chance to defend Diddy.
Jay-Z and Diddy moved in the same circles for years, their careers intertwining through music and business. But the recent legal accusations seem to mark a turning point, with no public reconciliation in sight. Industry watchers say Tacopina’s move could ripple through hip-hop’s elite, spotlighting the delicate balance of loyalty and legal strategy.
Neither Jay-Z nor Diddy has commented directly on Tacopina’s remarks. Representatives for Roc Nation and Combs did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
