Hunter Schafer Reacts to X-Men Fan Casts

Hollywood abuzz with speculation as Marvel Studios goes looking for the talent to revive the X-Men at the movies. Among the numerous speculations regarding the cast, the name that has been making waves—Huntingdon star Hunter Schafer as the character of Mystique. While giving a red carpet interview at the SAG Awards recently, Schafer addressed the mounting fan campaign saying, “Yeah, that would be cool.” The comments further added fire to the excitement among Marvel fans awaiting the arrival of the character of the shape-shifting mutant in a revamped format.

Mystique, also known as Raven Darkhölme, has been a central character in the world of X-Men since she appeared in Ms. Marvel #16 (1978). The shapeshifting blue-skinned mutant has been adapted in live-action movies by Rebecca Romijn and subsequently Jennifer Lawrence in the films X-Men: First Class (2011) and the ensuing sequels. The chance to reinterpret the character with Marvel Studios‘ reboot of the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lies fully ajar.

Aside from her skills, Mystique has been a character that has embodied transformation, power, and identity—elements that highly appeal with the audience. The idea of Hunter Schafer, a trans actor and activist, bringing the character to life has sparked actual discourse about representation and inclusion in Hollywood.

Fans’ response to Schafer’s SAG Awards acceptance speech has been largely supportive online. The majority of them believe that her ethereal screen image, shrewd acting skills, and bohemian style fit her ideally to play the character of Mystique. Earlier, X/Twitter user MyTimeToShineH, a veteran Marvel and DC insider, had claimed that Schafer had been “in the running” for the character although Marvel Studios has not confirmed any of the options yet. These alleged castings sent the internet into a speculation frenzy about Marvel’s approach with the reboot and if the studio will stick closely with the comic book adaptations or branch out in a completely different direction.

Although the likelihood of a superhero jump for Schafer at this point is unsure, the direction of her career is decidedly on the rise. Most familiar with her acting in the character of Jules Vaughn in the HBO series Euphoria, Schafer has proven highly capable as an actor. Beyond the X-Men rumors, she has several exciting projects lined up, including:

One of the most exciting upcoming projects of Marvel Studios‘ future includes the return of the X-Men and the mutants’ adaptation into the MCU. The character of the Mystique has been built with varied levels of depth—sometimes a mighty villain and sometimes an anti-hero attempting to grasp the conflict of acceptance of the mutants.

Considering Schafer’s experience as an actor, a model, and an LGBTQ+ activist, her casting would fit with Marvel’s expanding push toward inclusion. While the internet has had critical sections decry such diversified casting as “woke,” the MCU has been a representation of the changing social world throughout the years, a fact reiterated by Marvel legend Stan Lee himself, who once explained that “The only things we don’t have room for are hatred, intolerance, and bigotry.”

As Marvel Studios keeps casting decisions under wraps, Fans will be left in anticipation of the word. Nevertheless, with stars including Hunter Schafer expressing interest, the remake of the X-Men will be a fascinating project that fuses the old with the new and contemporary narratives. Whether or not Schafer ultimately takes on the role of Mystique, her openness to the idea has already sparked conversations about Hollywood’s evolving approach to superhero narratives.
