Denzel Discusses His Take on Chadwick Boseman
Denzel shares nothing but positive remarks in regards to the late Chadwick Boseman. Though Washington was involved in their reunion as he produced Boseman’s last film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, he had no idea Boseman was sick. In fact, not many people knew that the late actor was battling colon cancer.
Washington commends Boseman on his decision to keep quiet about his illness:
“Well, credit to him,” Washington told Tracy Smith during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning about Boseman’s decision to keep his diagnosis secret. “He kept it to himself; it was nobody’s business. He was there to deliver, and he delivered.
Denzel Washington Pushed Chadwick to Get Married
The veteran actor stood back and observed the real tender love between Boseman and his long-time girlfriend Simone Ledward. Washington even mentions nudging Boseman and encouraging him to marry Ledward who stayed close by his side. Further, Washington noticed how she cared for him on set. The loving couple got engaged last October and wed before Boseman’s untimely death.
“Some people on his team knew,” said the two-time Oscar winner. “His wife was there, even though they weren’t married yet. I saw how she cared for him and told him, ‘You should marry her,’ because she really loved him. But we didn’t know everything we know now.”
His comments follow those of Ma Rainey’s director, George C. Wolfe, who spoke in a previous interview about Ledward consoling Boseman up after he broke down after shooting an emotional scene.
Chadwick’s Absence is Felt, His Mark Left
Denzel Washington highlights the impact of Chadwick Boseman’s life on society.
“He did all he could do with what he was given, and he left it here for us to enjoy,” he told CBS’s Smith. “Chad will live forever, period.”
