18-Year-Old Mia Heller Invents Revolutionary Microplastic Water Filter

An 18-year-old from Warrenton, Virginia, built a water filter in her garage that pulls out 95.52% of microplastics without the pricey, clog-prone membranes most families hate replacing.

Mia Heller’s compact prototype went viral in April 2026 after years of quiet work. She started the project in spring 2024, frustrated by local news about PFAS and microplastic contamination in her area. Government agencies told residents filtration was “up to people to provide their own,” she recalled. Her family’s home system worked but the constant filter swaps drove her mom crazy.

“It inspired me to design a filter without the use of membranes, to decrease the costs and maintenance needs associated with water filtration,”

Heller said.

Over five garage iterations, she created a self-recycling system the size of a bag of flour. It processes about one liter at a time and could eventually sit under a kitchen sink.

Heller is a senior at Kettle Run High School who also attends Mountain Vista Governor’s School for math, science, and technology. She’s the classic American kid inventor: driven by a real problem in her own backyard. Now 18, she plans to study environmental science and public policy in college this fall.

Heller uses ferrofluid a safe, canola oil-based magnetic liquid.

“My design starts with a ferrofluid, which is essentially just a magnetized powder and oil,”

She explained.

“It’s not inherently magnetic, but when it goes into the area of an outside magnet, it’ll become magnetic.”

She pumps the ferrofluid into contaminated water. The liquid binds to microplastics (1 nm to 5 mm). Magnets then pull the bound particles out while a closed-loop system recovers and recycles about 87.15% of the ferrofluid. Clean water flows out. No disposable membranes. She even built her own turbidity sensor to measure results.

Microplastics turn up in U.S. tap water, bottled water, and even human blood. Studies show the average person ingests tens of thousands of particles a year. Traditional home filters cost money and need frequent replacements exactly the hassle Heller saw at home. Her low-maintenance prototype speaks directly to families worried about drinking-water safety and monthly bills.

Heller hopes to refine the design and one day bring an affordable version to market.

“The system developed offers a potential alternative to existing filtration technologies,”

She wrote,

“and in regions facing barriers to clean water access, could turn the tide on the way water pollution is addressed.”

This isn’t hype it’s a prototype. But it shows what happens when a teenager sees a problem, grabs tools from her garage, and refuses to accept the status quo. In a country built on backyard innovation, Mia Heller just reminded everyone why that spirit still matters.
