A 1-year-old boy named Ma’Khai died Thursday, March 26, 2026, from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 early Monday morning, according to Virginia State Police and family members.
The crash occurred around 2:04 a.m. on March 23 in the eastbound lanes of I-64 near the 261-mile marker in Hampton. A silver sedan, described in some reports as a Honda, veered off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, crossed the interstate, and then slammed into a lane barrier (jersey wall) on the left side. No other vehicles were involved.
Virginia State Police determined that the driver, a 14-year-old girl identified by family as Ma’Khai’s mother, was operating the vehicle under the influence. She was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries. The toddler was also not properly restrained in an age-appropriate car seat. Both were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries.
Ma’Khai, who would have turned 2 on April 4, succumbed to his injuries three days after the crash. Family members, including his paternal grandmother April Logan, described him as a joyful child who had been part of their lives since birth. Videos shared with media showed the boy appearing happy at a family gathering shortly before the incident.
Logan, speaking with WTKR News 3, expressed profound grief: “I’ve been in his life since day 1. This is the hardest.” She noted that her 17-year-old son is Ma’Khai’s father and acknowledged anger over the circumstances but added that her faith prevented her from harboring hatred toward the young mother: “The Lord, my spirit, won’t let me. My spirit won’t let me.” Other family members, including godparents, shared in the devastation, highlighting the upcoming birthday Ma’Khai would never celebrate.
As of March 27, the 14-year-old faces charges of driving under the influence (DUI), driving without a license, and child restraint violation. Additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues. At 14, she is well below Virginia’s minimum age for a learner’s permit (15), and the case is expected to be handled in juvenile court, though the fatality could influence proceedings. Her current medical condition has not been publicly updated in recent reports.
