LL Cool J & Jazmine Sullivan: Refusing to Cross the Line

On July 4, music and civic responsibility intersected powerfully when LL Cool J and Philly native Jazmine Sullivan withdrew from the Wawa Welcome America festival.

Both artists stood in solidarity with nearly 10,000 District Council 33 municipal workers, who had launched a strike over fair wages and benefits—disrupting trash collection, pool operations, and more across Philadelphia

LL Cool J posted on Instagram and X that he “will not cross a picket line and perform for money when people are hurting,” underscoring the importance of economic justice.

He also expressed hope for a resolution, stating he remained ready to perform once the city and union reached an agreement

“In this life we are only measured by how we uphold our morals … Today I choose to not perform … and stand with Philly’s DC33 until … fair living wages”

Jazmine Sullivan affirmed her stance on Instagram, writing:

Their decision drew praise from union leaders and the public. DC33’s president said their support “highlights [their] commitment to social justice,” while Mayor Parker publicly respected their decision and welcomed them back once workers received fair compensation
