Tory Lanez Transferred to Medium-Security Facility as Safety Concerns Mount

Tory Lanez, has been relocated to a medium-security prison after sustaining serious injuries from a brutal stabbing attack. The attack on him inside the prison as he served a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion has brought his case and the security of high-profile inmates under the spotlight once again.

Tory Lanez established himself on the strength of hits “Say It” and “Luv.” In July of 2020, however, things spun out of control at a party at Kylie Jenner’s LA mansion and escalated into a fight between Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion and her friend Kelsey Harris and Lanez’s bodyguard. Lanez accused Megan of shooting at her feet and got himself arrested as a consequence. A Los Angeles jury found Lanez guilty in December 2022 on three felony charges: two of assaulting Megan Thee Stallion with a semiautomatic firearm and a charge of carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm and shooting a firearm with conduct amounting to gross negligence. He has a 10-year sentence and serves time at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi, a medium-security facility.

On May 12, 2025, around 7:20 a.m., Lanez was attacked at California Correctional Institution’s yard time by 42-year-old Santino Casio, who has a history of in-prison attacks and a life term for second-degree murder. Casio stabbed Lanez 14 times: seven on his upper and lower back, four on his torso, two in the rear of his head, and once on his face. The attack collapsed both of Lanez’s lungs. He was taken to Bakersfield’s hospital and put on a breathing device. As of May 16th, Lanez began breathing on his own and was in stable but painful condition, according to reports.

After the attack, prison officials concluded Lanez’s safety could not be ensured at Tehachapi. He was relocated on May 22, 2025, to the California Men’s Colony (CMC), a medium-security facility near San Luis Obispo and the residence of well-known inmates including actor Danny Masterson. Lanez’s lawyer, Crystal Morgan, confirmed the relocation, observing that although Lanez is recovering well, he’s not happy about the move, although the reasons behind it remain unidentified. Lanez’s dad, Sonstar Peterson, raised concerns over the move and indicated,

“He is being moved right now as we speak, and we have concerns,”

without giving any other information.

The stabbing has brought Lanez’s case under increased public and court scrutiny. Rapper Drake openly called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to grant Lanez a pardon and signed a Change.org petition known as “Pardon Tory Lanez: Encourage Governor Newsom to Rectify a Profoundly Unjust Case” totaling over 270,000 signatures. The petition raises claims of prosecutorial misconduct and lost forensic evidence. Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also urged Lanez’s release based on reports from his attorneys alleging Megan Thee Stallion’s past friend and so-called shooter, Kelsey Harris

Megan Thee Stallion has strongly refuted these claims, asserting that no new evidence exists and that Lanez was rightfully convicted. In a statement, she expressed frustration over efforts to discredit her, saying, “

FACTS ARE FACTS, he did it, it was PROVEN IN COURT”.

A protective order against Lanez, stemming from harassment allegations, remains in effect until 2030.

Claims of new evidence, particularly those suggesting Kelsey Harris shot Megan Thee Stallion, stem from statements by Harris’s former bodyguard, Bradley James, who alleges he overheard Harris admit to the shooting.

However, court records show that a recorded interview with Harris, played during the trial, confirmed she saw Lanez fire the gun. Despite Harris’s inconsistent testimony, where she claimed memory lapses, the jury found sufficient evidence to convict Lanez. Appeals for a new trial have been denied, and no official new evidence has overturned the conviction.
