    Trailer

The show starts as a buddy team up with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes that tests their patience as they come off as the odd couple. That dynamic is a core feature of the show but it’s also about identity and coming into your own.

Regarding a timeline, the story directly follows the events of Avengers Endgame. Towards the end of the fim, Captain America, Steve Rodgers, passes on the torch to Sam Wilson. Ultimately, Sam Wilson must take on the mantle of Captain America.  Hesitantly, he tries to settle in this new identy, understanding the implications of serving a country that has abandoned him. Wilson’s story comes from a different POV than Rodgers whose patrioitism was honored and in turn, returned.

While many marvel fans groan about the idea of imposing a “political” storyline, it would be egregious not to explore how a hero who is black may experience the world and his role in it differently than a white superhero. Because of this struggle, Wilson still goes by the name Falcon in the series. Mackie mentioned that Wilson is grappling with the challenge of representing a country that doesn’t truly represent him as a Black man. Eventually, Wilson embraces his new identity.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is avaiable to stream on Disney +.
