Police Chief Found Guilty of Sending Innocent Men to the Slammer

A former Florida police chief is in deep trouble. Raimundo Atesiano is looking at three years in prison, after framing innocent black men.

Atesiano acted as the police chief for Biscayne Park, a small town with a struggling crime rate. During his time, he sent three innocent black men to prison. On Tuesday, Atesiano admitted to a judge that his actions were wrong. “When I took the job, I was not prepared,” he said. “I made some very, very bad decisions.”

Atesiano wanted to impress his peers, so he developed a plan to boost his department’s clearance rate. By pinning crime on innocent men, Atesiano’s department rose to have a 100 percent crime-solving rate. During a ceremony, celebrating his achievements, he bragged about his accomplishment.

“This year, as we stand, we have a 100 percent clearance rate on burglary cases in the village of Biscayne Park,” he said. “This is the first time that I’ve ever known that to happen in any department that I’ve ever been in.”

Atesiano served 16 months on the job, before he was caught. In that time he arrested a 16-year-old minor named T.D., Clarence Desrouleaux, and Erasmus Banmah– all for alleged burglaries.

He didn’t act alone. Other police officers confessed to being his accomplices. They’ve all entered guilty pleas, and will serve time behind bars as well.

Atesiano has two weeks to say goodbye to his family, before his sentence starts.
