    ‘Boyz n the Hood’ director John Singleton dead at 51

    John Singleton, the groundbreaking film director, has been pronounced dead.

    He was 51. A family spokesperson said Singleton passed away peacefully at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, surrounded by his family and friends.

    “We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time,” the family said in a statement.

    According to Deadline, earlier Monday, Singleton’s family announced that they made the decision to remove Singleton from life support. The family said the decision had been made “over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors. Singleton had been in a coma following a stroke 12 days earlier. His family had previously revealed the medical episode, but few details had been made available about the seriousness of his condition.

    John Singleton made entertainment industry history. He became the first African American and youngest person to be nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for Boyz n the Hood. His other film credits include Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Baby Boy, Rosewood, Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Four Brothers. He also co-created the FX drama Snowfall, which was renewed for a third season in September 2018.
