Black Mythology and Folklore Exists, It’s Just Not Mainstream

Michael B. Jordan currently faces slight backlash and criticism for his comments in a Vanity Fair interview. He spoke on the lack of black mythology and folklore, and how it’s important for black people to create their own mythology because it helps people dream.

“We don’t have any mythology, black mythology, or folklore. Creating our own mythology is very important because it helps dream. You help people dream.”-Michael B. Jordan

Some Twitter users commented on Jordan’s statement of not having any mythology or folklore for black culture, deeming his statement erroneous and ignorant.

Vanity Fair tweeted a response to the criticism of the actor’s statement. The tweet provided more context to Jordan’s quote revealing that he referred to making black mythology and folklore more prevalent in the television and film industries.

Other people tweeted that Jordan’s ignorance of the existence of black mythology and folklore is significant. His ignorance defines just how popular it is among black culture.

On Oct. 2, Vanity Fair tweeted a link to the November issue cover story saying, “Black Panther actor and V.F. cover star Michael B. Jordan details his move from matinee idol to Hollywood mogul-and why he needs people to know he can do more than just act.”

Michael B. Jordan has since not responded to the criticism.

However, Jordan openly discussing a lack of black mythology and folklore in television and film presents a major concern. Ironic as it sounds, a black actor who’s most recent and prominent role as Marvel’s Erik Killmonger believes that mythology and folklore is not the forefront of mainstream media.

It may not seem like a big concern to those who already know about the deep, rich history of black mythology and folklore, but there are people like Jordan who has never heard of or known this to exist. Him exposing his own ignorance allows others like him to realize their own ignorance, too.
